Sick Day Essentials & Tips

Winter is still upon us in Vancouver, and unfortunately, there has been a terrible bug going around the last couple weeks. And just my luck, I caught it! I have been stuck at home all week with this terrible flu, not being able to go to work, school or much else really. If you somehow unluckily end up in a similar position to me, these are the essentials that have helped me through the week and some great suggestions I have received from friends.

A Fuzzy Blanket

My blanket is my staple for when I’m sick, or anytime I’m lounging around the house. It makes reading a book or watching tv that much cozier and warm. The lightweight material makes it easy to bring around the house, and you can get them in an array of colours to match your other furniture. If you’d like to purchase one, click here.

Vitamins & Natural Products

Taking vitamins all the time is always recommended, but time to time I only remember to take them after I have already gotten sick. Here is a list of the top 3 I recommend taking specifically when you’re sick: vitamin C, echinacea, and oregano oil. You can get any of these products at your nearest drugstore or supermarket.

+ Lemon and Honey in tea can never go wrong!

Entertainment

Whether you prefer bingeing on the next Netflix series, curling up with a new book, or spending time with loved ones; While you’re confined to your house from being too sick to leave, entertainment is a must. Funny enough, I’m actually in the middle of a couple series on Netflix right now that I can recommend for Canadian Netflixers: Altered Carbon, Life in Pieces, (or two oldies but goodies) Friends and Gossip Girl.

Lately, I’ve been so busy with school I haven’t had any time to read new books but here are two on my radar:

The Sun and Her Flowers – By Rupi Kaur

The Subtle Art of Not Giving A F*ck – A Counterintuitive Approach to Living a Good Life – By Mark Manson

Comfort Food

Eating healthy when you’re sick is very challenging because all you want to eat is comfort food. The best way of meeting in the middle would be eating the “healthier” versions of the stuff you love. I’m totally a hot soup person when I’m sick but I’ve found some healthy delicious compromises.

Breakfast: oatmeal with peeled apple chunks & cinnamon & dollop of greek yogurt OR a smoothie bowl (check out my recipe!)

Lunch: tomato soup & half grilled cheese OR vegetarian chili

Dinner: leftover casserole aka quinoa & veggies & beans broiled with cheese & panko

These are the top essentials I used this past week to finally rid myself of whatever sickness that was following me! I can definitely elaborate on the brief recipes I mentioned if anyone has any questions about them. It always depends on what type of sickness you have, but I think these tips can help get you back in tip-top shape!
