Winter Skin Favourites

The winter is a sad season, less sun, more rain, and way more cold. Personally, I like to combat the winter blues with a little bit of retail therapy. Since the weather here in Vancouver gets pretty cold, my skin tends to dry out. Therefore I buy more skin products to test out. I usually start off with the mini-size to see if I like it, then go back and buy the regular size. Here are 8 of my favourites that I have found myself reaching for the most on these cold winter days.

Ole Henrikson – Wonderfeel Double Cleanser ($39)

This cleanser is hands-down the best one I have tried in the last couple months. It’s so nice and gentle on your skin, leaving it feeling moisturized and not tight at all. The best part about it is it smells like starbursts when you apply. This cream-like formula glides onto your skin initially, then suds up with water. The package also comes with a small reusable cloth to wipe your face afterward.

Makeup Forever – Mist & Fix Setting Spray ($17-$37)

I have been using this setting spray for the last 6 months, and loving it. Not only does it keep your makeup in place and looking great all day, but it has moisturizing benefits as well! I have two bottles, a mini one for my purse, and a regular size bottle for every-day use. The scent is light and fresh, as I don’t like any harsh smells lingering on my face all day.

Boscia – Luminizing Black Charcoal Mask ($65)

I recommend this charcoal exfoliating mask for days when your skin is quite flaky and dry. Firstly it will remove all dry skin, close up pores and leave for face feeling fresh and ready for moisture. I use this mask on days when I am lazing around the house. It is quite abrasive so I would encourage you to let your skin rest after removing. This mask is one of the more fun products in my favourites. It really is like peeling off a layer of your skin to reach a softer, fresher layer.

LANEIGE – Water Sleeping Mask ($33)

My skin gets so dry in the winter that I need to apply multiple layers of moisturizer per day. That usually would entail in the mornings, and then again at night before I sleep. This sleeping mask keeps my face very hydrated all through the night, whilst rubbing my face on my pillow, each day I still wake up with soft smooth skin. The formula is thin and easy to apply, it does not feel like it will be clogging my pores. This product has won a Best of Beauty Award from Allure in 2017 and I can see why!

Rodan+Fields – Essentials Lip Shield ($18)

Chapstick used to be my go-to for a lip product, all year round. I have no been converted away from the waxy residue left on your lips from those cheap products. Although $18 seems a little expensive, it is totally worth it! They come in a package of two, so technically only $9 each. A hint of grapefruit can be smelt after applying. These lip moisturizers also have an SPF of 25.

First Aid Beauty – 5 in 1 Bouncy Mask ($47)

This mask immediately became one of my favourites the first time I used it. It left my skin feeling young, bright, and fresh. Many masks nowadays cannot be used as frequently, because of their harshness to the skin. This is the opposite, it is very gentle, moisturizing and light. The mask does not tighten or dry to your face, it is simply left on for 10-15 minutes, then rinsed off. If I feel like having a no-makeup day, I will surely use this to brighten my complexion. The five benefits this mask claims to have are: nourishing, calming, visibly firming, plumping, and refining; But I think it does much more!

Too Faced – Hangover Replenishing Face Primer ($40)

I started using this primer last winter when Vancouver had a crazy snow storm and my skin was very very dry. Since then, it has been one of my staples. The cream-like texture of this primer glides across your face when applied, and you can feel its moisturizing qualities. It has a light coconut scent, which is very gentle on the skin. Can be substituted for primer & moisturizer if you have combo/oily skin.

Rodan+Fields – Soothe Mineral Sunscreen ($42)

Winter blues calls for tanning beds and tropical vacations. I recognize that it is unhealthy and not good for your skin to go tanning indoors, but I’m a super pale girl, so I have to do something! I love escaping during the cold months somewhere warm, and I will always bring along this sunscreen. I use this sunscreen to combat and protect against the negative effects of the UV rays, while still keeping my skin moisturized. The mineral-based ingredients ensure that only the best things soak into my skin.

After reviewing all my favourite products, I have first noticed that I spend way too much money on skin-care. Although I can say that your skin is something you will want to keep looking young and fresh because you will have it for the rest of your life! Next time, I will do a drugstore version for cheaper options $$$. I use all these products weekly or daily, they keep my skin blemish-free and looking young.
